Thematic Workshop: EU-Japan Workshop on Gender-based Violence and Women, Peace and Security
Wednesday 14th - Thursday 15th, December
Background
In both the European Union (EU) and Japan, gender-based violence (GBV) is pervasive and affects all levels of society. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on women’s lives and rights has been disproportionate, with poor working women and other marginalised women being among the groups that have been particularly affected. The effects have been visible in terms of increased levels of GBV at home and in the workplace, loss of livelihoods and jobs and the loss of rights and entitlements (the right to land, to productive assets and to inheritance and property, among others).
For these reasons, the EU and Japan have placed gender equality, the fight against GBV, as well as women and youth empowerment as key policy priorities on their policy agendas.

This workshop on “Gender-based Violence and Women, Peace and Security” is part of the ‘Project for Enhancing Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in and with Japan in the Post-Pandemic Era’, whose objective is to mainstream gender equality in Japanese policies and strengthen EU-Japan bilateral cooperation in the areas of gender equality and women's empowerment.

For these purposes, key stakeholders from the EU and Japan representing the government, youth, civil society and international organisations that lead discussions and policy-making to promote the fight against GBV and women's empowerment are invited as speakers to provide insights on the topic and share good practices and constructive discussions.
